In regards to the recent tragedy at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, we want to give our deepest condolences and support for the victims, their families, the LGBTQIA+ community, the Latinx community, and anyone else who has been affected. With strength, understanding and determination, we have to continue to stand strong together against any bigotry, prejudice, violence, hatred, and oppression. There is no denying that this not just an attack targeted at a specific group, but an attack at America as a whole.
The government and media have released a stream of direct and indirect statements, attacks, actions etc. that has made it clear that the LGBTQIA+, Latinxs, and the Arab/MENA Americans still struggle to find a place in this world where they feel safe and free to live their lives without judgement. Islamophobia and Homophobia have created quite a bit of dialogue in recent news throughout the world, and the occurrence of this event has just enabled the dialogue further.
The unconditional amount of love and support that has been shown all across the country and the world from major cities, to college campuses, airlines, etc. have been very supportive and understanding. It shows that we, as a nation, can still stand together to give our support, and most importantly, advocate and educate our friends, family, peers, community, and the rest of the world on the oppression minority social and racial groups face. By doing so, we show that we cannot be divided and weakened by these acts of hatred and acts of terror.
As advocates for the AAPI community at the University of Illinois and as allies for our fellow communities, we pledge to continue our work for social justice on campus and in our community. In addition, we will continue to be a resource to build connections between everyone in the APA community and non-AAPI community. Let us seize this opportunity to grow and unite.
